The Bean Machine

The Bean Machine for Windows

The Bean Machine for Windows is a software package used to teach, demonstrate, and understand variation. Important concepts and tools of Statistical Process Control (SPC) can be demonstrated and evaluated. The Bean Machine simulates the performance of a Quincunx in which beans are dropped from a funnel through rows of staggered pins. Each bean has a 50:50 chance of falling to the left or right when it hits a pin. Movements of the funnel represent Special Causes of Variation while the rows of pins represent Common Causes.

Features

  • Results of the falling beans can be displayed in either a histogram or run chart fashion.
  • The Bean Machine can run at different speeds and in an open or hidden mode to demonstrate various concepts.
  • Individual results, averages, and/or ranges can be displayed.
  • Measurement variation can be explained by grouping the rows of pins.
  • Specifications, action limits, etc., can be displayed and used to evaluate effectiveness.
  • Process adjustment strategies can be manually or automatically evaluated.
  • Dr. Deming's four "FUNNEL RULES" can be illustrated.
  • Can be used as a bead box, chip box, or simulator.

System Requirements: Program can be run on a PC with Windows operating system.
